In the Nevada desert (USA), the legendary Area 51 is a restricted military area where aliens are said to have once landed. In Hilden, Area 51 is a small cosmos for young people, cabaret, concerts and other events where visitors can leave their own planet behind for a few hours. The city of Hilden created the location in 2003 as a successor to the legendary Kleefer Hof youth center. The motif of aliens as cultural ambassadors became a trademark: intergalactic creatures adorn a signboard and several works of art. Posters of science fiction classics such as "Star Wars" and "Alien" hang in the foyer.
Open door for teenagers
On Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., young people can meet at Area 51 in a casual atmosphere, chill out, "hang out," play billiards or foosball.
Concerts
Area 51 Hilden literally offers up-and-coming bands a stage to present themselves to a larger audience. Every year in November, for example, there is the newcomer contest of the district of Mettmann "neanderland TUNES", which has paved the way for many a formation. With gothic or metal concerts, Area 51 also caters to the followers of subculture.
Cabaret & Comedy
The Kultursaal at Area 51 is not only for rocking, but also for laughing. Many big and small stars of the cabaret and comedy scene have already performed here or made their first steps. Wilfried Schmickler, Anni Hartmann, Markus Barth, Jens Neutag, Martin Maier-Bode - these are just a few names from the long chronicle of Area 51's cultural history.
Kids & Family
The stage plays at Area 51 Hilden are not just for adults. There are also regular children's and puppet shows, organized in cooperation with the municipal family office "Stellwerk". This is also how other events such as the Frauentrödel (Women's Flea Market) came about.
Open stage and pack singing
In 2017, Area 51 hosted an open stage for the first time, where artists of all kinds could present themselves. Repetition not excluded. The crowd favorite, however, is and remains David Rauterberg's "pack singing": A "choir leader" encourages the audience to warble along to well-known songs from the pop and rock world while the lyrics are displayed on a screen.
Rehearsal room
Young bands can rent one of two rehearsal rooms at Area 51 by the hour to jam and rock out.
Youth Parliament
The Youth Parliament has its administrative headquarters at Area51.
The Jugendtreff am Weidenweg (JaW) belongs to the department of children and youth development and is a meeting place for all young people.
The JaW can be divided into 3 areas in terms of content:
The youth club is an open offer for children and teenagers. Currently there are the following times here:
Since 2015, there has been a youth club called "Campus OT" in the schoolyard of the Marie-Colinet secondary school. The abbreviation "OT" stands for "Open Door". Our distinctive sign is the bus stop sign in the schoolyard with "Campus OT" written in large letters.
In the modern equipped room there is space for a versatile offer for children and young people. Creative, sports and intercultural cooking activities take place from Monday to Friday.
We want to experience many nice things together, e.g. make excursions, arrange a cinema evening, play or also become artistically active. We also have a kitchen at our disposal to cook or bake something.
Once a week, always on Wednesdays, the "girls' meeting" takes place to chat, have fun and tackle joint projects.
Our opening hours (during school hours) are as follows:
Mondays: 15:00 - 20:00
Tuesdays: 15:00 - 18:00
Wednesdays: 15:00 - 18:00
