Nathan the Wise
Play by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in Series A (Drama) of the Cultural Office
The play of the hour, considering the still unresolved religious conflicts of our time. With great foresight, Lessing not only describes the senseless claim to sole representation of the three monotheistic world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, he also offers a clever, ever-valid solution. It is no coincidence that the plot is set in Jerusalem at the time of the Third Crusade. In other words, in the holy place that each of the religions claimed for themselves even back then.
Sultan Saladin turns to the wealthy and noble-minded Jewish merchant Nathan, played by the well-known actor Peter Kremer, for a loan. In conversation, he asks Nathan which of the three religions he believes to be the true one. Nathan answers with a fairy tale, the famous Ring Parable. It is about an old tradition in a family, according to which the father has to bequeath a precious ring endowed with special power to his favorite son. Now the situation arises in which a father loves all three of his sons equally. He has two perfect copies of the ring made, and so each son inherits a ring. The sons argue about who has the real ring. A judge orders each of them to live and act as if their ring were the real one and only return after a long time...
