Witch hunt
Drama by Arthur Miller in the theater series A (Drama) of the Cultural Office
In 17th century Puritan Salem, there is only one explanation for the condition of pubescent girls who react strangely after a night-time dance in the woods: the work of the devil. The well-known witchcraft specialist Pastor Hale is called in to help. During the interrogations conducted by him, the girls give the excuse that they have been seduced and bewitched. They quickly realize that they can escape punishment if they accuse others of devilry. And so they go on denouncing, accusing disagreeable parishioners and enjoying their new-found power. A witch hunt begins. But when young Abigail accuses the wife of farmer John Proctor of witchcraft before the witches' court specially convened by Judge Danforth, she has crossed a line. However, until it becomes clear that the madness and mass denunciation are only motivated by selfish aims, several innocent people are executed...
With its extraordinary stage effect and razor-sharp character portraits down to the smallest supporting figure, Arthur Miller's play "Witch Hunt" is still a lesson today about all kinds of mass hysteria and politically or religiously motivated delusions.
