The murder of Walter Lübcke
A contemporary play by Christian Scholze in series A (drama) of the Department of Culture
On October 14, 2015, the then Kassel District President Walter Lübcke spoke at an event in Lohfelden. The politician provided information about a refugee home that was due to open shortly. Lübcke not only expressed his deep conviction with his words, but also formulated society's basic understanding of the rule of law and democracy. While a large part of the audience listened attentively, a group of right-wing extremists attempted to disrupt the event and provoke Lübcke. His response caused a spiral of hatred in right-wing forums. Four years later, Walter Lübcke is dead, shot dead on his terrace at home.
The perpetrator, Stephan Ernst, was present at the event in Lohfelden. He has been known to the authorities since the 1990s. Between 2015 and 2019, he became radicalized and eventually turned into a murderer. He is an example of a changing society and the increasing violence and willingness to murder in the radical right-wing scene.
Based on the tragedy surrounding the political murder of Walter Lübcke, the Westfälisches Landestheater is developing a production about the development of right-wing extremist movements in Germany.
